The Value of Hong Kong Ministry

Hello everyone, my name is Candy Choy, and I am a minister originally from Hong Kong. I have had the profound privilege of working with Webnet as a Hong Kong Minister for nearly five years, and on 1 July 2026, I also began volunteering in this capacity for the Baptist Union of Great Britain. Looking back over my years of ministry here, I can truly see how God has guided me to this place, allowing me the joy of working alongside Him and my dear colleagues. It is a true honour to serve the Hong Kong community in this way.

The BNO visa scheme started by the UK Governement in January 2021 as a direct response to China imposing a National Security Law on Hong Kong, which the UK viewed as a serious breach of international law. Since 2021 church life in Hong Kong has become difficult, primarily through state control, legal threats, and forced alignment with the Chinese Communist Party.

In my ministry, I hope to gently guide those who do not yet know Christ towards faith, while helping existing believers to grow and flourish within their local churches. Over the past few years, it has been incredibly moving to witness so many Hong Kongers journeying from non-believers to followers of Christ, stepping forward for baptism, committing deeply to their churches, and even growing from church members into deacons. I praise the Lord for His abundant grace. I view my role very much as a bridge, helping Hong Kongers to integrate fully into local Baptist congregations and encouraging them to use their gifts to serve the local churches. Walking alongside them through both spiritual challenges and the everyday hurdles of settling into a new life has yielded countless beautiful testimonies. Seeing so many mature and commit to their faith in a new land is a profound joy, and I give all the glory to God.

To help newcomers adapt to Baptist church culture, I run 'Christianese' classes at various levels. These sessions help Hong Kongers better understand the English Bible and learn familiar English hymns, allowing them to feel more comfortable and engaged during English-speaking services. I also assist a few churches by translating English sermons into Chinese, sharing these with our community ahead of time so they can read the message in their mother tongue and follow along more easily on a Sunday.

Additionally, I organise Cantonese worship services. During these times, we sing, worship, and share family news together in English, followed by a message in Cantonese once or twice a month. This provides a gentle, comforting balance for those who are still adapting to an English-speaking environment. Throughout the week, we hold women's Bible study and devotional groups, where we meditate on Scripture together and express our reflections creatively, such as through Pastel Nagomi Art.

Beyond Sunday services, I have partnered with local ministers to host marriage seminars, and we are eagerly looking forward to holding parenting talks soon. This past summer, I was also very pleased to run a youth discipleship programme.
