From Clevedon Baptist Church, North Somerset
As a church we have been looking for ways to connect with the shops, businesses and the people who work in them, located around our church building. As a way of making initial contact with them we have visited them taking a gift from the church. At Christmas time we took a chocolate advent calendar with us and this Easter it will be the gift of a Real Easter Egg.
The idea came from our Senior Minister Antony’s experience of chaplaincy work as Chaplain of Peterborough Utd Football Club and Police Chaplain in Herefordshire when he often looked for opportunities to take gifts into the workplace that connected with the gospel story.
Taking over 100 Real Easter Eggs to the shops/businesses around us gives us the opportunity to make contact with people, it shows that we have thought about them and it gives the opportunity for us to have a conversation with people and to listen to them. Importantly we find ourselves outside of our building and available for the Holy Spirit to use us in these situations. The eggs will be delivered by people in teams of two or three and these people have received some training for this. Many people from the church have also sponsored an egg and will be praying for the shop or business it is delivered to. We hope this will be a starting point to develop further missional work in our community, perhaps even developing town centre chaplaincy.
